About Alumni

1.    Introduce yourself?

I am a cancer researcher with a special focus on head and neck cancer.

After starting my research journey with a PhD that focused on oral cancer, my research portfolio expanded over the years and now includes various applications of digital pathology, cancer immunology and immunotherapy, different cancer types among others.

I held a number of positions in different institutes including at the University of Jordan, The University of Aberdeen, The National Cancer Institute and I am currently an Associate Professor of Oral Biology at the University of Birmingham.

2.    Share your fondest memory from your time at Jordan University?

Getting to know my colleagues and to treat patients was always a pleasure.

3.    In one word, how would you describe Jordan University?

Memorable!

4.    Explain how your experiences at UJ shaped you?

My passion for cancer research started during my undergraduate studies at the University of Jordan (where I studied Dentistry). I developed an interest in Oral Pathology which led me to study for a PhD centred on using digital imaging and mathematical descriptors to quantify oral cancer and precancer.

5.    Discuss what fascinated you about your chosen course of study?

Oral cancer is a devastating disease that affects patients' quality of life. It has a poor outcome and this is mainly due to late diagnosis. Identifying markers that can help with early diagnosis and improve patient outcome is my work's overarching aim. To achieve that, I use state of the art technologies including image analysis, artificial intelligence, mathematical descriptors to name a few. I find this fascinating and the opportunity to apply these methods to such a major and global health issue is very rewarding.

6.    Offer advice to graduating students preparing to enter the workforce?

Be kind and respectful to others, work hard and never stop learning!

7.    Reflect on what you wish you had known during your time as a student?

I wish I had been more familiar with different career paths and different opportunities for further education.

8.    Identify the person who has had the greatest impact on your career?

My PhD supervisor, Professor Gabriel Landini.
