1. Introduce yourself?
I am a cancer researcher with a special focus on head and neck cancer. After starting my research journey with a PhD that focused on oral cancer, my research portfolio expanded over the years and now includes various applications of digital pathology, cancer immunology and immunotherapy, different cancer types among others. I held a number of positions in different institutes including at the University of Jordan, The University of Aberdeen, The National Cancer Institute and I am currently an Associate Professor of Oral Biology at the University of Birmingham. |
2. Share your fondest memory from your time at Jordan University?
Getting to know my colleagues and to treat patients was always a pleasure. |
3. In one word, how would you describe Jordan University? Memorable! |
4. Explain how your experiences at UJ shaped you?
My passion for cancer research started during my undergraduate studies at the University of Jordan (where I studied Dentistry). I developed an interest in Oral Pathology which led me to study for a PhD centred on using digital imaging and mathematical descriptors to quantify oral cancer and precancer.

5. Discuss what fascinated you about your chosen course of study?
Oral cancer is a devastating disease that affects patients' quality of life. It has a poor outcome and this is mainly due to late diagnosis. Identifying markers that can help with early diagnosis and improve patient outcome is my work's overarching aim. To achieve that, I use state of the art technologies including image analysis, artificial intelligence, mathematical descriptors to name a few. I find this fascinating and the opportunity to apply these methods to such a major and global health issue is very rewarding. |
6. Offer advice to graduating students preparing to enter the workforce?
Be kind and respectful to others, work hard and never stop learning! |
7. Reflect on what you wish you had known during your time as a student?
I wish I had been more familiar with different career paths and different opportunities for further education.
|
8. Identify the person who has had the greatest impact on your career?
My PhD supervisor, Professor Gabriel Landini.
