A Jordanian archaeologist and academic, he has managed and contributed to numerous excavations in Jordan and its surroundings, and has contributed to the institutional development of local academic institutions. He is an honorary professor who recently served as the president of Yarmouk University.
Among his contributions to Near Eastern archaeology are significant discoveries at the Ain Ghazal site in Jordan.

Kafafi earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the University of Jordan (1971, 1977) and his Ph.D. from the Free University of Berlin (1982).

His Majesty King Abdullah II awarded him the "King Abdullah II Medal for Excellence" of the second degree.
He was selected by the scientific committee of the World Science Forum held in Jordan as the "Star of Jordanian Science in Archaeology."
